(EMU) – St. Kitts, November 4, 2019: Staff of the Education Management Information System (EMIS) was on hand to receive thirty ASUS laptops which were handed over to the Ministry of Education by His Excellency Tom Chih-Chiang Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of China- Taiwan.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Hon Shawn Richards received the laptops on behalf of his Ministry stating that the use of these laptops is clear cut given the Education Planning and Curriculum Development Unit’s current thrust to rewrite the schools’ curriculum in an effort to make it more relevant and student focussed.
SOUNDBITE “Most persons would be aware that at this particular point in the history of Education we have quite a bit taking place at that particular Unit. We are in the process of reforming, rewriting the curriculum and we are looking at the curriculum from Early Childhood to Secondary Schools. That of course is quite involved process.”
The Minister elaborated that the activity has involved and will continue to require communication with consultants at all levels of the Education sector and wider stakeholders in the Education fraternity. Additionally the Minister explained that a number of teachers have been engaged in writing the new curriculum and that the use of the laptops would provide greater efficiency in doing so.
EMIS Director, Mr Christopher Herbert in expressing thanks for the Laptops which would be utilised in his division stated that the Republic and of China Taiwan and the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis had inherent similarities in terms of their determination to be trend setters. From the stand point of the Government of Taiwan, Mr. Herbert saluted them for their very outstanding position in technology on the global scene. As far as the Government and People of St. Kitts and Nevis, and more specifically the Ministry of Education, Mr. Herbert explained that the fervour and enthusiasm to utilise these technologies to advance the educational and economic standing of residents is equally admirable.
Ambassador of the Republic of China- Taiwan, H.E. Tom Chih-Chiang Lee confirmed that Taiwan is in fact a world leader in technology. Revealing that this is not the first time that ASUS has made this type of donation, the ambassador thanked ASUS for making it possible for Government and people of St. Kitts Nevis and the Republic of China-Taiwan to maintain their cooperation.
SOUNDBITE: “Taiwan is actually pretty strong in ICT. We are strong in terms of hardware production. Like director Herbert mentioned, we are the # one semi-conductor producer in the whole world. We are also pretty strong in terms of software and as service providers.”
ASUS which is a Taiwanese company is one of the top five PC producers in the world.
Ambassador Lee gave assurances as a strong ally to St. Kitts and Nevis that Taiwan would continue to play an important role in National Development and to provide assistance in the area of ICTs.
Five of the 30 laptops are being shared with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a partner with the Ministry of Education in keeping the collaboration going with St. Kitts Nevis and other friendly nations such as Taiwan.
