BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JULY 4TH 2017 – Leader of the Opposition in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, has accepted an invitation from the Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General (Political), Dr. Josephine Ojiambo, to be the Feature Speaker at a Commonwealth Women in Political Leadership Experts Research Validation Workshop in Barbados.
The workshop on ‘Women’s Political Leadership and Participation in the Commonwealth Caribbean,’ is scheduled to be held in Barbados on Friday 7th July.
Some 15 experts are expected to attend the workshop.
“Your experience as a former Prime Minister and Leader of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party will no doubt be invaluable to the deliberations,” the Commonwealth said.
The workshop is an initiative on the part of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s work to support member states to achieve gender parity in political participation and representation as expected under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDGs 5 and 16.
The workshop will share the findings of two Commonwealth research studies and policy tools on this subject matter, pioneered in the Commonwealth Caribbean.
The first paper focuses on achieving more inclusive elections in the Caribbean region.
“We will also share an accompanying gender checklist for election observation, which leverages on the organisation’s niche in election observation by gathering the best practices used by political and other stakeholders to achieve more gender inclusive elections,” said the Commonwealth.
The second paper focuses on the role of political parties in advancing women’s leadership, and offers insights on what works and what does not.
