Charlestown, Nevis – Greene is fast becoming a household name on the NJCAA annual awards list. The humble Monroe coach has yet again been named for his third straight Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the year award.
The announcement of awards came on Wednesday 2nd March 2017 when the inaugural class of Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2017 NJCAA indoor track & field season were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as voted on by the NJCAA’s coaches. Greene was named Atlantic Region Men’s Indoor Track and Field Assistant Coach Of The Year for the 2017 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Season.
Greene who is in his 9th year with the program, coaches middle and long distance for the Monroe Mustangs.
Monroe athlete, Kasique Oliver and James Majenge are two of the top athletes at present. Kasique owns the top mark in the Atlantic Region in the 600 meters, 800 meters and 1000 meters, while also ranking 2nd, 4th and 8th on the national level, respectively.
While James Majenge owns the top time in the mile and 3000 meters in the Atlantic, while Greene’s distance medley relay team sits 2nd in the Atlantic Region.
Oliver, a freshman from Glen, St. Vincent & Grenadines, has qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in six events – four individually and two relays. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the region in the 600 (1:19.40), 800 (1:54.40), 1000 (2:33.33) and is No. 3 in the 400 (49.46). His times in the 600, 800 and 1000 rank him in the top-10 nationally as well.
Coach Greene during the brief interview lamented that the most important aspect of his job is to ensure that his athletes experience growth over a period of time. According to Greene, “that’s the real progress, the athletes achieving personal bests, setting records, experiencing growth and being scouted by top tier Universities”.
Greene also used the opportunity to reach out to athletes in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis by stating that there are numerous opportunities available for athletes.
