West Indies were good enough to qualify directly for last June’s ICC World Cup in England after finishing fourth in the last ICC Women’s Championship.
The newly constructed Brian Lara Stadium will play host to the three-match One-Day International series between West Indies Women and Sri Lanka Women, as the Caribbean side begin their bid for direct qualification for the ICC 2021 World Cup.
In a statement Tuesday, Cricket West Indies announced the matches would be played on October 11, 13 and 15 at the facility in Tarouba, located in south Trinidad, and would form part of the new cycle of the ICC Women’s Championship which will be contested between the leading eight women’s teams.
The Windies along with Sri Lanka, Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and newly crowned 50-over World champions England, will do battle in the Women’s Championship until March 2020.
Hosts New Zealand and the three other highest-ranked sides at the conclusion of the championship will gain direct qualification for the World Cup.
The remaining four sides will enter a qualifier.
West Indies were good enough to qualify directly for last June’s ICC World Cup in England after finishing fourth in the last ICC Women’s Championship.
They, however, failed to make an impression, finishing sixth after winning just twice.
Following the ODI series, the Windies Women will clash with the Sri Lankans in a three-match Twenty20 International series from October 19-22 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.
An 18-member West Indies Women’s squad are currently in training in Trinidad in preparation for the upcoming series. (CMC)
