New Rochelle, N.Y. – Monroe College sophomore Zakiya Denoon is set to compete in the SEC conference next fall after signing a national letter of intent to run track for Louisiana State University, (LSU) in Baton Rouge next season.
Denoon will conclude her studies at Monroe College where she will earn an Associate Degree at the commencement ceremony to be held on June 5, 2016 before taking her talents to Baton Rouge to compete for the Tigers in the fall of 2017.
Zakiya’s campaign this year has been nothing short of remarkable. The Tobago native earned All-American honors in three different events: the 60m, 200m and 1600-meter relay. Additionally, she won the 60m and 200m event at the NJCAA indoor
national championship.
Monroe College Director of track and field and Head Track coach, Lesleigh Hogg , reflected on the signing, saying, “Denoon is a very talented athlete who have excel in many different events. She will bring a winning pedigree with her to the already-elite LSU program.”
LSU is a member of the NCAA Division I SouthEastern Conference. The school is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and carries an annual enrollment of approximately 31,527. Denoon will start there in the Fall semester.
