Leeward Island Hurricanes defeated Jamaica Scorpions by 13 runs in an exciting Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 encounter at the Conaree Cricket Grounds earlier today, Sunday 24 November.
Outstanding batting performances from Kieran Powell (105) and Amir Jangoo (69) provided a solid foundation for the Leewards.
After losing an early wicket when the score was on 27, Powell and Jangoo featured in a 155 run partnership before Powell was bowled for 105.
With Powell’s century, he etched his name in the Leeward Islands history books as the first player to score five List A centuries.
At 182-2, the fall of Powell’s wicket triggered a collapse, they lost three wickets without advancing the score. At (182-4 ), Thomas and Hamilton both made naught as they were back in the pavilion in a matter of minutes.
Scorpions restricted the Leewards to 255-8. Oshane Thomas bagged 3 wickets for 59 runs. Green and Bulli picked up two wickets each.
Chasing 256 to win, Jamaica was off to a flying start. Rovman Powell top scored with a belligerent 103 as Scorpions raced to 242 all-out in 28.3 overs.
Facing a situation where they needed to reach their target in 31 overs to advance ahead of the Leeward Islands on a higher net run-rate, captain Rovman Powell man-handled the Leeward Island bowlers.
He reached his hundred in 38 deliveries, (possibly the fifth fastest List A Hundred) and was caught wicket-keeper bowled Boatswain for 103 off 40 balls.
Quinton Boatswain (4-85) was the pick of the bowlers for the Hurricanes. Berridge bagged 2/62 and Jason Campbell picked up 2/34.
The Hurricanes will play hosts Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the second semi-final on Friday 29th November at the Queen’s Park Oval.
The game is slated to commence at 1:30 p.m.
