Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 7, 2019 – It has kept its name as the gala event of the year and was not disappointing for the nearly 700 patrons attending.
The 18th Annual New Year’s Gala hosted by The Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, the distinguished Leader of the Opposition and National Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party exceeded all expectations.
UWI Professor Verene Shepherd kept the wide-cross section of the patrons including diplomats, businesspersons, residents, visitors and returning nationals glued to her presentation on reparations for slavery in the Grand Ballroom at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino.
She spoke after the invocation, remarks and toasting by Dr. Douglas and her introduction by Mr. Crois Freeman.
Professor Shepherd was presented a gift for her presentation by National Carnival Queen, Tawanna Collins.
The grand evening also included selections by Pink Panther, reigning back to back Calypso Monarch Karisa Willet and Trinidad and Tobago’s dramatist, and king of comedy, Learie Joseph.
After a sumptuous dinner comprising a Waldorf salad, vegetable pasta salad, rice, vegetables, potatoes, traditional Christmas turkey, ham, lemongrass crusted mahi-mahi, Kittitian fruit cake and soursop soufflé sponge cake, the partons danced into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
