“So tonight I give the signal that Labour is mobilized. Labour is demanding the resignation of Jonel Powell and Lindsay Grant. Earlier last week, I wrote to the Bar Association, I wrote to the Governor General to demand that they resign from this government. Tonight, I say to you, I will give the first signal, that tonight, the first day of December, Labour declares that if we don’t get our election called in the next 90 days we will take to the streets and we are not coming off!…I give them 90 days to ring their own bell. If they don’t ring their bell … I will ring the red, NextGenSKN Labour bell! 90 days I give them!” This was the passionate call to action that was delivered by Dr. Denzil Douglas, Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party to the excited crowd at a public meeting that was held Sunday night at Taylor’s Range.

Convened to support the week of activities of Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, the Labour Party candidate for Constituency #1, five of the Labour Party #NextGenSKN team took to the podium to decry the corruption that has taken root in the Team Unity Government. “Enough is enough! It is time for this government to GO!” was their rallying cry as they outlined one by one Team Unity’s many failures that have overwhelmed the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The public meeting came on the heels of the humiliating defeat to the Term Limits Bill, which the Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris tried to rush through Parliament on Friday last week which was struck down when only seven of the elected legislators voted for it, just one vote shy of the two-thirds majority that was required for the Constitutional Amendment to pass.

The Opposition Labour Party had already made it clear that they would only support the Term Limits Bill if it were subjected to extensive public consultations to be followed by a referendum.

The Labour Party used their platform to also publicly express their outrage that a sitting member of Parliament, in the person of the Hon. Lindsay Grant, representative for St. Christopher Four, had still not resigned after the damning judgement that was passed down, late October 2019, where he, as well as declared PAM candidate for Constituency #2, Ambassador Jonel Powel, were found to be liable for “Breach of Trust”, Breach of Fiduciary Duty” and “Misappropriation of Monies” (theft) in the amount of EC$1.2 million belonging to a client.

Dr. Douglas, in his presentation, further stated that he had written to the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, as well as the Governor General of St. Kitts and Nevis, calling for the resignation of Mr. Grant and Mr. Powel who are no longer fit to serve as public officials or as lawyers. This latest scandal tops a long list of numerous embarrassing scandals that has plagued the Harris-led administration since 2016, which have caused the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to determine that Team Unity will be the first one term government to ever serve in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The presentations by the #NextGenSKN team were met with rousing applause and cheers from the energetic crowd amidst loud chants of “VOTE THEM OUT!”
