BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 17th 2017 – The people of St. Kitts and Nevis are being urged to demonstrate their disgust with the two-year old Timothy Harris-led Team Unity administration on May 1st, a holiday here t mark Labour Day.
Citing a recent Bill Johnson poll in which over 60 percent of 1100 likely voters on St. Kitts feel that the country was heading in the wrong direction,81 percent are concerned about government corruption, 70 percent about nepotism, 75.6 percent on crime and 51.8 percent on victimisation, Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas called for a strong message to be sent to the PLP/CCM/PAM coalition.
“We invite you to demonstrate how fed up you are with the escalating crime situation in the country. We want our parents to again signal with your feet and your presence that you are annoyed, disgusted and if possible, angry with the government for ending the several social support programmes especially those that supported your own children in pursuit of a tertiary-level education in our colleges in St. Kitts and Nevis and beyond. We are saying march with the Labour Movement on Labour Day, march for yourself. Don’t march for Labour, march for yourself, march for your children. Show what is happening in your country you are disgusted with and it must come to an end,” Dr. Douglas said on Wednesday’s popular call-in radio programme “Issues” on Freedom 106.5 FM and Kyss 102.5FM.
He said the demonstration should also showcase the rights of the all workers and all citizens.
Dr. Douglas said the Government’s “Working for You” programme is a farce because all the evidence indicates “they (the Government) are not working for you. They are working for themselves.”
Several public events leading up to Labour Day, on May 1st, celebrated on the first Monday in May each year in St. Kitts and Nevis have been planned.
Public Meetings are planned on Thursday 20th April in St. Paul’s; Thursday 27thApril, Trafalgar; Friday 28th April, the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site and on Sunday 30th April in Central Basseterre.
A mini motorcade in Basseterre in the afternoon of Friday 28thApril will showcase the eight contestants for the annual Ms. Labour Queen Show to be held on Saturday 29th April at 17 Degrees. The laying of wreaths at the graves of stalwarts precedes the traditional Labour Day March on Monday May 1st.
