Basseterre, Saint Kitts, August 10, 2026 (SKNIS) – Thirty-seven (37) nationals of Saint Kitts and Nevis have been awarded scholarships to pursue university education in the Republic of China (Taiwan), marking the largest number of scholarships awarded to the Federation by Taiwan in a single year.
The scholarship awards were formally presented during a ceremony on Saturday, August 08, 2026, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
Twenty-eight (28) students received the 2026 Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Scholarships, while nine (9) students were awarded scholarships under the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) programme.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew; Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley; Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas; Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley, and Taiwan’s Resident Ambassador to Saint Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Edward Ling-Wen Tao.
Delivering remarks at the ceremony, Dr. Douglas described the occasion as a significant milestone in the longstanding relationship between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan.
“For the first time in the Federation, we would have had such a large number of scholarships allotted from the Republic of China, Taiwan,” Dr. Douglas stated, while commending Ambassador Tao and his Government for providing the opportunities to the 37 scholarship recipients.
The foreign affairs minister said the scholarships demonstrate Taiwan’s continued commitment to the development of the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis, while also reflecting the government’s determination to broaden the scope of the relationship between the two countries.
Dr. Douglas also reaffirmed the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to advocating for Taiwan in regional and international forums, while recognising Taiwan’s contribution to the advancement of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
“Taiwan must be recognised for its herculean efforts in propelling the advancement of small island developing states,” Dr. Douglas said. “Our people have reaped tangible benefits from our long-standing relationship with you.”
The minister concluded by signalling an even greater expansion of the scholarship programme, telling Ambassador Tao: “Be prepared as we are looking forward to doubling the scholarships for next year.”
The announcement points to the government’s intention to significantly expand access to international educational opportunities for nationals in 2027, building on what has already been described as a record scholarship allocation this year.
