Hard-hitting West Indies veteran Chris Gayle has announced that he will retire from One-day Internationals following the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 England and Wales.
Gayle is presently included in the West Indies Squad for the first two ODIs against England. As they prepare for this year’s World Cup, it must be noted that Gayle last played for the Windies during a home series against Bangladesh last July.
The announcement of Gayle’s retirement was made via the Cricket West Indies Official Twitter account.
As the West Indies record holder for most ODI hundreds, (23) Gayle is the second leading run scorer in the ODI format for the Windies Team with 9, 727 runs. He trails Brain Charles Lara, who amassed 10,405 throughout his career.
Gayle also has the distinction of scoring the highest limited overs score by a West Indian, 215 – Christopher Gayle. The trendsetting Gayle also equalled Afridi’s record of most sixes in the three formats combined. Both have 476 sixes.
However, Gayle achieved the feat in 443 matches while Afridi reached the mark in 524 matches.
Afridi hit 351 sixes in ODIs, 73 sixes in T20Is and 52 in Tests. Gayle on the other hand has smashed 275 sixes in ODIs, 103 sixes in T20Is and 98 maximums in the longest format of the game.
