SKN PULSE – Nevis engaged St. Maarten in the final debate of 46th Annual Leeward Island Debating Competition held in Anguilla: team St. Maarten proposed the moot: “Black people’s suspicion and resentment of white people is justified”.
Nevis, who opposed the moot was represented by Kay-Jel Smithen and Rol-J Williams. Nevis emerged victorious after the final results were read.
Rol-J Williams was adjudged best overall speaker of the competition and Kay-Jel Smithen was best speaker of the final debate. In Nevis’ first debate against Anguilla, they were the Proposition: Rol-J won the best speaker award and he was ably assisted by Lauryn Lawrence.
The moot in Nevis’ first debate was “Climate change supersedes crime and drug trafficking as the greatest threat to the stability and development of the Caribbean region”
Team Nevis have now won back to back tiltles. They won the 2017 Leeward Islands Debating Competition when it was hosted in Nevis in February, 2017.
With one more Championship to it’s name, Nevis now has 9 LIDC titles just one shy of Antigua and St. Kitts.
Teams participating in this year’s debate were: Antigua, Anguilla, St. Maarten and Nevis.
Nevis was represented by Rol-J Williams and Kay-Jel Smithen along with Ms. Tassai Pemberton, Mr. Mikkel Maloney, Ms. Delcia Burke and Ms. Lauryn Lawrence. Ten supporters travelled with the team along with coach(es) and teachers.
