(EMU) – St. Kitts, July 18, 2017: The Ministry of National Security in Partnership with the Ministry of Education has begun discussions to revive a crime preventative initiative entitled TAPS.

Teens And Police Service, (TAPS) has been restructured to focus more on the instructional based aspect of crime detection and prevention. Officials from within both Ministries met to discuss the programme and the impending implementation for the next academic term.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Mr. Osmond Petty gave a brief overview of the programme, “Three police officers will be identified to teach the TAPS programme full-time within the schools,” He also announced that the TAPS instructors will not only be instructing but they’ll be very involved remedying the day to day matters that occur within the schools. “They’ll be working with the secondary schools dealing with problems that may result in crime, encouraging students to take a different path as well as improving respect and discipline in the youths, interacting with parents and the community as a whole.”

Mr. Vincent Hodge, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education assures that with the implementation of a programme, which is geared towards reaching the youth and positively changing their lives is an affirmative way in which the Ministry can make an impact. “The Ministry of Education welcomes this programme and we envision that it would go a long way in helping to create a stronger bond between police officers and our students.”

Introduction of TAPS

The programme is designed to reduce the social distance between at risk youth and law enforcement. In the past, police officers of The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force stated that (TAPS) is not about locking children up, it is about providing public safety for all. This can be achieved through learning, interaction, and discussions between at risk youth and law enforcement officers of The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
