For the 4th time in the last five years, SL Horsfords St. Paul’s United won the SKNFA President’s Cup title, after defeating MFCR Old Road United Jets 2-0 on Sunday Feb 16 atWarner Park. After a tepid first half, St. Paul’s broke the deadlock early in the second half with a 55th minute goal from Jovaughn Leader and a goal from the penalty spot in the 75th minute from
Kalonji Clarke. Both teams ended the match with 10 men after Jardel Isaac of Old Road was sent off with a straight red card in the 24th minute and Kishawn Phillip of St. Paul’s picked up his second yellow card in the 58th minute. After the match Coach Thrizen Leader of St. Paul’s pointed to his game plan, which gave them desired results.
“The game went according to our plan, which was to create overloads on one side; look for the big switch, create 1v1 and attack on the flanks,” he explained. I think Old Road, after being down a man, they dropped back into a low block. So it was quite difficult to break the (defensive) line, but afterwards, we told the guys, just keep the ball rotating. The space will come and fortunately we got a chance and we finished,” he said.
Old Road’s Coach Alexis Morris bemoaned going down to 10 men so early in the match, which he said affected their game play. Nevertheless, he gave a lot of credit to the fight and determination of his players. “
“(The red card) really took a toll on us and we were able to regroup and get it together. As you realize we would’ve been in the game for at least a good 30 minutes from the first half into the second half, and was equal to St. Paul’s regardless,” Morris said. “What failed us tonight is that we were not able to capitalize on the chances we created. And at the end of the day, St. Paul’s would’ve scored two goals from two errors that we made; two simple errors…and they got two goals,” he lamented.
The President’s Cup marks the official start of the St. Kitts and Nevis football season.
