St. Kitts and Nevis was among 2 nations that were absent from voting on the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital ‘null and void’. With the recent local elections in Nevis, Foreign affairs Minister in the Federal Parliament and Premier of Nevis, Hon. Mark Brantley would have been actively engaged in trying to finalise his cabinet for their inauguration ceremony to be held on Sunday.
A total of 128 countries voted in favour of a resolution calling on the US president to withdraw the decision while 9 countries voted against.
The overwhelming vote came even after stern warning from US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Hayley. She urged rival nations not to call for a vote on the issue, warning she would be taking names, the Mirror UK reported.
The resolution affirmed that “any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council, and in this regard, calls upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem.”
