Basseterre, St. Kitts (26th January, 2025) — The St. Kitts Electricity Company Limited (SKELEC) is pleased to announce the commencement of the Basseterre North Extension Feeder Upgrade Project, which began on Sunday, January 26, 2025. This initiative consists of two phases, with the first phase spanning six weeks. During this period, the mainline conductors will be upgraded from Buckley’s (near the JNF General Hospital) to West Farm along the island’s main road.
The primary goal of this upgrade is to more efficiently distribute power to customers from Buckley’s to Boyd’s. Additionally, the project aims to improve the reliability and quality of electricity supply to the area.
“This upgrade project, valued at EC $1 million, marks the first of many infrastructure improvement initiatives planned for the coming months as SKELEC remains committed to enhancing power quality and grid reliability,” said Clement Williams, General Manager of SKELEC. “The project will involve the largest mobilization of resources to date, with over 30 linesmen/technicians and support staff representing various departments within SKELEC’s Transmission and Distribution Division, in collaboration with other telecommunications utility companies.”
To facilitate the necessary upgrades, several planned outages will be scheduled, primarily on weekends, to minimize traffic congestion along the island’s main road.
Engineering Manager, Mr. Kenrod Roberts, highlighted the project’s additional objectives of reducing faults and outages that have recently impacted customers in the area. “We understand the inconvenience caused by the outages and wish to assure the public that these planned service interruptions are part of our broader efforts to minimize emergency and unplanned outages in the future,” Mr. Roberts stated.
SKELEC kindly reminds the public to avoid the work zone areas while work is being undertaken. Vehicular traffic is prohibited in the area, and pedestrians are strongly advised to exercise caution if passage through the area is necessary.
While SKELEC takes every precaution to protect customer appliances during outages, we encourage all customers to take proactive steps to safeguard their equipment at all times.
SKELEC apologises for any inconvenience these outages may cause and thanks the affected customers for their patience during this time. For more SKELEC updates please visit our Facebook page: SKELEC – St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd or log on to www.skelec.kn.
