BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 2nd 2017 – Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the massive Labour Day March through the streets of Basseterre on Monday (Labour Day) not only celebrated the 58 Anniversary of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP), but also “a march of protest and challenge to the policies of the Timothy Harris-lead Team Unity Government which has trampled on the rights of workers over the last two years.”
“The thousands marched in solidarity with those who have been the victims of victimization, and they are saying, bye, bye to victimisation, bye, bye to corruption, bye, bye to nepotism, bye, bye to the failed policies of the Timothy Harris regime,” said Dr. Douglas, who is also the National Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP).
Directing his message to the hundreds of workers victimised in one form of another by the 26-month old PLP/CCM/PAM coalition administration, Dr. Douglas, the former Prime Minister said: “right cannot be wrong and wrong must be righted and Labour will right the wrongs in our country once again.”
He said the high cost of living over the past two years has resulted in an erosion of the spending power of the weekly minimum wage of EC$360.
“Persons cannot pay for the basic utilities with the wages that they are receiving; others have been sent home and there has been a reduction in work days,” said Dr. Douglas, who pointed out that two years ago hundreds of construction workers were employed and received decent wages to look after their families.
“Two years later, tremendous hardship is being reined on the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. The rights of public servants have been trampled upon and political cleansing has become the order of the day for anyone whom the Team Unity Government perceives does not support them,” said Dr. Douglas.
He gave the assurance that a St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Government “will return dignity, decency and pride to the working class people and citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
