Deputy Prime Minister, Shawn Richards and Premier of Nevis, Mark Brantley greeted Nevisian athletes on their return to the Federation after a successful trip to Grenada where they participated in the Whitsuntide Games.
Both Ministers of Government utilized the opportunity to give congratulatory remarks to the team on their own behalf and on behalf of the Federal Government and the Nevis Island Administration respectively.
Minister responsible for Education, Youth and Sports encouraged the athletes to keep on pursuing their education while Brantley echoed to the athletes that sport is a way to advance themselves.
The ministers highlighted the efforts of the organizers and commended Mr. Timothy Caines and Director of Sports, Mr. Jamir Claxton and those who worked behind the scenes to make the team’s participation a reality.
Richards applauded the fact that the initiative was undertaken at the club level. He opined that rather than waiting on SKNOC or the SKNAAA to compete on the local level, athletes should participate in regional events which further help to develop them.
He said:
More and more clubs should seek these particular opportunities rather than waiting on (SKNOC), the Olympic Committee or the St. Kitts Athletics to do so.
Brantley was delighted to welcome the Nevis team home, he said:
We are very proud of all of you. Absolutely proud of each and everyone of you. I hope the experience in Grenada was thrilling for you.
Brantley gave the athletes the assurance that his government is committed to the task of supporting athletes once they continue to work hard.
Continue to work hard..nothing comes easy. You have the commitment of the Nevis Island Government. Thank you for the effort.
