SKN PULSE – The debaters of the Charlestown Secondary School and the Nevis Sixth form College Debating Society defeated last year’s champions the Antigua State College Debating Society in the LIDC Finals held on Sunday 26 February at the Nevis Performing Arts Centre.
Host team Nevis was represented by Rol-J Williams and seconded by Gabriella Brantley.
In Sunday night’s Final, Nevis proposed the moot, “the atrocity of our age is the billions of dollars spent on sports”. Nevis amassed a total of 578 points which proved too much for Antigua who were only able to garner 489 points.

The Best Speaker of the Finals was Nevis’ Gabriella Brantley.
The Best speakers for each debate were awarded during the prize giving ceremony. They were, Shakaila Carty’ – Anguilla, Khalifa Pencheon – St. Kitts, Dawud Chapman – St Marten, Rol-J Williams, Gabriella Brantley and K-Jel Smithen both of Nevis. The Best Overall Speaker of the 45th Annual LIDC was K-Jel Smithen of Nevis.
As part of the prize giving ceremony, former Geography teacher of the Charlestown Secondary School, Mr. John Hanley received the prestigious George Irish Award for his sterling contribution to the Literary and Debating society of Nevis.
With its 8th title, Nevis is now two titles away from front runners Antigua and St. Kitts for the most number of wins in the competition’s history.
