Charlestown, Nevis, October 12th 2017 – The past few days has been chaotic in St. Kitts and Nevis. From stabbings, to shots ringing out and person(s) been shot.
Just yesterday, police responded to a report where a young Newcastle resident was shot in his leg.
Prior to that SKN has recorded two murders, a police shooting and an unknown person or persons pumping bullets into a vehicle.
In light of the recent activities, the amendment (s) made to the Firearm Bill which have increased the penalty to 15 years have not injected any fear into the criminals at all. Seemingly, there was a long lull in activity but now the crime debate continues on it’s never ending journey.
Dating back to 2011 the amount of homicides committed with a firearm was 88%. Already for the year there has been 19 murders with a large portion caused by Firearms: It begs the question..Is the amendment a good mechanism to deter criminals from firearm use when the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has a low detection rate?
Law and order must be the mantra going forward: but protecting our borders could be a significant way to curb the influx of firearms into the country.
