The St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party held an official turning over ceremony of the leadership for Constituency number 1 last evening, (Thursday 5th July) at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel. Former Deputy Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and Caretaker for Constituency number one, Dr Asim Martin, handed over the baton to his successor, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley.
Dr. Martin told invited guests and well wishers that, although he is passing the mantle on to Dr. Hanley, he will continue to be intricately involved in the campaign and in the Labour Movement.
He said, “I thank you for electing me to represent you in 1993 and forward. I would have considered myself a very young person then to take up the mantle as the leader of East Basseterre and I want to thank you for giving me that opportunity,” Dr. Martin told the constituents of East Basseterre.
Dr. Martin stated that he is committed to assisting Dr. Hanley in whatever way he can.
“I want to say to Dr. Hanley that he has my support. Whatever I can do to ensure that he wins the and win he must do, and to return East Basseterre to Labour, he has my 100 percent support. I will make sure that the warriors of East Basseterre are mobilized to make sure that East Basseterre returns to Labour and that Geoffrey is the Victorious Candidate when the elections are called.”
Dr. Martin emphasized, “I am not going anywhere. I will be right here to continue to serve in the ranks of the Labour party – to serve with you and to work with you.”
New caretaker, Dr. Hanley launched his new tagline, “I am here with you”, as the official candidate of constituency number one.
For Hanley, his tagline represents a sign of his deep and long-standing commitment to all the people in his constituency, comrades of Labour around the Federation and in the Diaspora.
His pledge and acceptance…. “I, Geoffrey Hanley have been chosen to lead the work of the Labour Party here in Constituency #1, and I humbly accept this mandate with a sense of purpose and promise. I stand and declare in my acceptance a oneness of purpose with all the people of St. Christopher #1 and all the nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis, living at home and abroad.”
