BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Concerns have been raised by a small businessman that the Timothy Harris-led Team Unity Government is awarding contracts to foreign-based companies when the expertise is available locally.
The Team Unity Government’s close relationship with foreign companies and “faster rats” was highlighted by one of its staunchest supporters, Stacey Hobson, during the Monday’s Jouvert.
Hobson donned a headpiece depicting the head of a large black rat with a long tail with the words: “JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD “THE RAT RACE WON” ALONG CAME FASTER RATS”
WINNFM first reported last week that it questioned Electrical Engineer Nubian Greaux, owner of New Generation Engineering regarding talks in some circles that he was pegged for the contracts to install lighting at two playing fields in St. Kitts, but that persons in high places have plans to bump him and award the job to a company out of Trinidad.
“At this point in time I don’t know how much I can say but I can definitely say I have tendered on these projects and I was informed unofficially by Public Works and other persons that I was recommended [for the job] by Public Works and the independent team that assessed the project.
“I haven’t been awarded the contract; it’s been pending for some time now. So I really can’t speak to any attempt to award the contract to a foreign company.”
The construction of two wooden buildings as temporary classrooms for the so-called state of the art Basseterre High School (BHS) was awarded last year to a Barbados company, alleged to have close ties to Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris.
Ernst & Young was also awarded a contract to audit the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF), although two other entities earlier found no evidence of wrongdoing. An Antiguan attorney was also given a juicy contract to perform duties as Special Prosecutor and the new head of the SIDF is said to being paid almost triple the monthly salary of the previous holder.

The new head of the Citizenship by Investment Unit has replaced a local and ambassadors and advisors have also signed lucrative contracts.
