NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (July 19, 2019) — President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-wen spoke glowingly of the touristic allure of Nevis and the island’s natural value recently. Her visit marked the first by a president of Taiwan.
The top Taiwan official expressed her sentiments at the ground-breaking ceremony for the multi-million dollar St. Kitts and Nevis Pinney’s Beach Park Project during a historic one-day visit to the island. The project is jointly funded by her government and the Nevis Island Administration (NIA).
“Before my arrival, I had already heard that this is one of the most popular destinations for visitors. Seeing it for myself I understand why people are so enamoured with this beautiful location.
“Like St. Kitts and Nevis, Taiwan boasts rich tourism resources. The number of foreign visitors to Taiwan has continued to grow over the past few years. That is why we are honoured to be here to exchange experiences in tourism development and join hands on the Pinney’s Beach Park Project,” she said.
Dr. Tsai Ing-wen underscored the importance of pursuing tourism development for long-term benefits, and pointed to the symbolism and key features of the project.
“We must also ensure long-term sustainable development. This particular cooperation project is a true reflection of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is friendly to the environment, involves the local community, boasts a sustainable design and pools resources from all sectors.
“Construction will begin soon on the park and I would like to point out one other unique aspect. The park will feature mosaic murals made by children from Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis. Indeed, when completed this park will serve as a monument to the deep friendship between our two countries,” she stated.
The president was accompanied by representatives from Taiwan’s tourism sector who used the opportunity to explore commercial ventures. She expressed hope that their visit would engender an even greater cooperation and more tourism exchanges.
Dr. Tsai Ing-wen used the opportunity to thank Hon. Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis for the warm welcome to the island, wished the project well, and expressed hope that more people from Taiwan would visit Nevis to witness its beauty.
