Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 2, 2017 – The opposition St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) will soon present its slate of candidates as a credible team and only alternative to the failed tri-partite arrangement which forms the nation’s government.
SKNLP National Political Leader and Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas told the nation at a press conference on Tuesday, that the important mandate given to the newly-created Candidate Section Advisory Committee (CSAC) has been working over the past several months and is ready to submit its final report to the party’s National Executive.
“I make mention of candidate selection at this time in this November 2017 Media Conference, because as Labour begins to present itself as the only alternative to the current administration, it must do so with a credible team ready to secure the interest of our citizens at home and abroad, the interest of our residents, our investors and developers, our elderly, our women folk and our children,” said Dr. Douglas.
He disclosed that the Candidate Selection Advisory Committee was one of the important platforms of reforms after beginning its implementation programme arising out of a number of recommendations from an assessment of its performance in the 2015 General Elections, and a review of the Party’s Governance Structures as a modern political organisation after more than 80 years of its inception, the Party having been founded in 1932 as the Worker’s League,” said Dr. Douglas.
.
He told reporters that the Implementation Programme of recommendations started in July 2016 after the Party’s review by a group of University of the West Indies (UWI) political scientists and consultants.
“Such a programme involved re-organisation of the Party at both the Constituency Branch and National levels with the creation of a number of National Committees and continuing training through a series of workshops of personnel of the Party and consultations with stakeholders and Interest Groups at the Constituency Branch and National levels,” said Dr. Douglas, a former prime minister.
The Candidate Selection Advisory Committee was endorsed by the delegates at the Party’s 84th Annual National Conference in May 2017 and the National Executive Committee gave full support and credence to the spirit of the Party Constitution with regard to empowering the National Executive of the Party to select candidates for National Elections on consultation with the Constituency Branches of the Party.
