The Leeward Island Hurricanes captured their first win of the season in grand style by beating Winward Islands by 165 runs at Gros Islet, (January 23-26).
Led by Alzarri Joseph and Sheeno Berridge the Hurricanes dismissed the hosts Windward Islands for 138 and 51 respectively.
Joseph bagged 5-41 in the first innings and with a 216 run lead, Leewards opted to have Volcanoes return to bat. Berridge starred with the ball and bagged 5-22 from 10 overs. His consistency and accuracy puzzled the batsmen as Volcanoes crumbled to their second-lowest total of all-time since the tournament’s existence.
Assisted by off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall (2-7 from six overs) and young pacer Alzarri Joseph (2-11 from 10 overs) the Hurricanes enjoyed their biggest victory (by runs) against the Volcanoes.
Former West Indies Under-19 captain Emmanuel Stewart topped scored with 11.
Gaining maximum batting points, the Leewards scored 354-8 declared.
Four batsmen scored half centuries. Joseph starred made 64, Jaison Peters 57, Kieran. Powell 69 and Amir Jangoo 51.
Lewis was the most successful Volcanoes bowler with 3-80 from 18 overs; left-arm pacer Preston McSween and Josh Thomas took two wickets apiece.
With the win, Hurricanes moved from last to fourth. The Hurricanes gained a whopping 22.4 points from the contest, taking their tally for the season to 26.6. Volcanoes, previously second, dropped to third on 32.8, after gaining 3.4 from this match.
