PHILIPSBURG/BASSETERE, JULY 31ST 2017 – A man wanted in nearby Dutch St. Maarten has been caught in St. Kitts with a high powered rifle and scope, a bullet proof vest, a backpack containing a quantity of cured marijuana, hashish (a marijuana derivative) and cash.
Grenada-born Kathron Fortune, also known as “Cuchi,” escaped from police in St. Maarten in 2016.
St. Maarten authorities said Sunday the authorities in St. Kitts and Nevis have confirmed the arrest.
Fortune fled on Monday, February 15, 2016 at approximately 3:30pm. He was taken to a doctor’s clinic in Cay Hill, when he managed to draw a firearm on the two guards who were with him at the time. He took off on foot and was picked up by an unmarked vehicle, and had been on the run ever since.
In Basseterre, police Fortune was captured on Saturday morning, July 29, by a patrol of of police officers from Police District “B” who responded to the sighting of unusual activity along the coastline in Cranstoun Bay, an area in the vicinity of Newton Ground.
Police said initial investigations determined that the person detained had illegally entered the Federation, and was later identified as Kathron Fortune a citizen of Grenada who resides in St. Maarten..
Fortune had in his possession when captured, a high powered rifle and scope, a bullet proof vest, a backpack containing a quantity of cured marijuana, hashish (a marijuana derivative) and a sum of United States currency.
He was arrested, formally charged and cautioned for Possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was also charged with entering the Federation illegally, Possession of Marijuana and Possession with intent to supply. Other charges will be laid as the investigation continues.
Fortune is on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison.
