Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis Launches Indoor Air Quality Task Force to Develop National Policy

Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis – February 6, 2025 – The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has officially launched the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Task Force, marking a pivotal step toward improving air quality standards and protecting public health. The inaugural meeting, held on February 6, 2025, at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Conference Room in Fortlands, Basseterre, brought together a diverse group of experts, policymakers, and stakeholders committed to addressing the nation’s growing indoor air quality challenges.

The establishment of this Task Force follows the National Dialogue on Indoor Air Quality, which took place in October 2024 and underscored the urgent need for action. Discussions at that forum highlighted widespread concerns over pollutants, mould growth, poor ventilation, and the health risks associated with indoor air contamination—all exacerbated by climate change and outdated building practices.

The IAQ Task Force has been convened with a clear mandate: to develop a National Indoor Air Quality Policy that will set enforceable standards, introduce monitoring mechanisms, promote sustainable building practices, and increase public awareness. This initiative aligns with the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda, ensuring that environmental resilience, economic development, and public health remain interconnected priorities.

Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis and Minister of Health, Honourable Dr. Terrance M. Drew, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to this critical initiative, stating:

“The air we breathe indoors is just as important as the air we breathe outdoors. Poor indoor air quality is a silent but serious threat to health, productivity, and overall well-being. This Task Force represents a proactive and decisive effort to ensure that all citizens and residents—whether in schools, workplaces, or homes—have access to clean and safe air. We are committed to delivering concrete solutions that will lead to real, lasting improvements.”

Chairing the IAQ Task Force is Mr Dexter Fassale, a leading expert in sustainable architecture and indoor environmental quality. Speaking on the significance of this initiative, he noted:

“This Indoor Air Quality Task Force is committed to developing a National Indoor Air Quality Policy. Owing to the fact that we all share common indoor and outdoor spaces, maintaining a healthy indoor environment is a collective responsibility. In this regard, the Task Force unites a diverse group of individuals from various disciplines, each uniquely positioned to contribute to this vital initiative. In the coming months, we will engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders across the Federation to gather insights and foster meaningful collaboration in shaping this critical policy.”

The IAQ Task Force comprises representatives from a broad cross-section of governmental and non-governmental organisations, including the Ministries of Health, Sustainable Development, International Trade, Justice & Legal Affairs, the Nevis Island Administration, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bureau of Standards, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Building Contractors Association, the St. Kitts and Nevis Institute of Architects, and environmental NGOs, among others.

The Task Force’s key objectives include:

• Drafting a comprehensive National Indoor Air Quality Policy that addresses gaps in current regulations.
• Developing air quality monitoring standards and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance.
• Promoting public education campaigns to raise awareness about IAQ risks and solutions.
• Recommending sustainable building practices that prioritise clean air and environmental safety.
• Establishing clear guidelines for workplace and residential air quality standards.

During the meeting, members engaged in a dynamic discussion on immediate action items, identifying short-term milestones and quick wins to build early momentum. The Task Force will meet regularly to review progress, refine strategies, and ensure that key deliverables—including the first draft of the National IAQ Policy—are completed by mid-2025.

The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental sustainability and public health.
