Police Officer Delroy Stapleton of Lodge was convicted on November 22, 2019 for the offences of Unlawful Wounding and Discharging a Firearm in a Public Place.
The offences were committed on June 27, 2016 but the charges weren’t brought against Stapleton till February of 2017 after a review of the investigation (conducted by the Violent Crimes Unit and the Office of Professional Standard) by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
The incident occurred on the grounds of the Frigate Bay Strip. Timothy Henry, (National athlete) was shot in the neck when Stapleton, (an off-duty police officer at the) fired into a crowd; Stapleton, who was at the Strip, was responding to an altercation between two men.
Stapleton was suspended from all duties with immediate effect pending the determination of the charges.
He was attached to the Beat and Patrol Unit, Basseterre Police Station prior to the incident.
His sentencing was adjourned to January 12, 2020.
