Franklyn Browne MBE, a survivor of the MV Christena disaster of August 1, 1970 — the worst maritime tragedy in the Federation’s history, has died. He was 97.
The sinking of the Christena claimed the lives of over 200 Nevisians. Browne along with his son, survived by swimming all the way to Nevis.
Browne, a former Educator, started his teaching career in 1943 as a fifteen year old teenage pupil teacher and it lasted until 1983 when he retired as a headteacher.
As an Educator, he was instrumental in introducing the College Preceptors Exam at New River. Browne was the first to introduce Sports Day in athletics and organized cricket matches among all the schools on Friday afternoons.

On June 02, 2013, Franklyn Browne was invested as a Member of the British Empire at Government House. The Community Centre in Camps bears his name, the Franklyn A. Browne Community Centre.
