West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago national cricketer Rayad Emrit was on the field of play when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the cricket stadium during a T20 league match in Afghanistan on Wednesday.
Three people were killed and several injured.
The match, which was being held at the Alokozay Kabul International Cricket Ground in Kabul, was between the Emrit’s side, the MIS Ainak Knights and Boost Defenders.
The game is part of the a league competition similar to the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League.
Former Australian test cricketer Dean Jones who was commentating at the time said: “I saw the blast go off. It shook us out of our seat. The shockwaves went right throughout the grandstands and the windows … all the players hit the ground while the game was still on.”
He said: “I threw my microphone into the window and I just grabbed my bag and I was ready to run, to get out of there”.
The match was stopped briefly, but once the Afghanistan government-appointed security gave the clearance, it resumed
Emrit is reportedly trying to leave Afghanistan, telling local media that he was no longer in the right frame of mind to play cricket.
“I just want to get out of there” he said.
The cricket authorities in South African and Zimbabwe have asked that their players leave the country.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board reported that all the players, coaching staff and match officials were safe.
